The Clear Qur'anic Exegesis (6)
Muhammad Khayr Ramadan Yusuf
Surat Al Baqarah (18-20)
18- They had disabled the functions of their ears, tongues, and eyes, therefore, they do not hear good, do not speak of what may benefit them and do not see the truth. So, how would they be guided and how they will respond to guidance?!
19- The example of those people in their suspicion, disbelief, and hesitation is like rain comes down from the sky in a very dark night that contains a fearful and strong thunder and a lightning that shines in brightness. They put their fingers in their ears lest something might harm them. This action does not protect them because Allah encompasses them with His Power and they are under His Will.
The resemblance is: Darkness contains doubts, disbelief, and hypocrisy.
Thunder makes the hearts fall from fears. So, the hypocrite are in severe fear.
Lightening is the light of faith which shines in the hearts of the hypocrites in sometimes.
20– Because of the intensity of this lightning, it is almost about to take away their sights, so when it flashes for them, they walk therein. However, when darkness covers them, they stand still in a maze.
Lightning is metonymy for the intensity of the light of the truth, and if the hypocrites saw something of faith, they would follow it but sometimes doubts sneak into their hearts causing their hearts to lose foresight and become in a maze!
If Allah wills, he will take away the hearing and sights of the hypocrites because they left the truth after they had known it. When Allah wants to inflict His Wrath on His Servants, He is able to enforce it.
This is a warning for the hypocrites against the power of Allah and that He encompasses their affairs.
