![]() How are people resurrected and what will be their condition? ‘Abdullah bin Hamoud al-Furaih The Resurrection (9) How are people resurrected and what will be their condition?Every person is resurrected on what they died upon –we ask Allah for a good ending. Proof to that: the Hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: “Every person is resurrected on what they died upon”[1] Al Nawawi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “the scholars have said: it means: Every servant would be raised (in the same very state) in which he dies”[2] The good hearted Ibn Qayyim (may Allah be pleased with him) said that is is a great statement so ponder upon it, as he said: “man dies on what they lived upon and they are resurrected on what they died upon.” For this meaning, there is a lot of evidence and witnesses. Among them: 1- The pilgrim: if he dies, he is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection making Talbiya (saying Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik) because of the Hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) in the two sahih about the man who was struck by his camel while he was a pilgrim with the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Hujjat Al Wada (the farewell Hajj). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two pieces of cloth, and neither perfume him, nor cover his head, for he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection saying, 'Labbaik,' (i.e. like a pilgrim).”[3] 2- The martyr: he is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection while his wounds are spewing with blood. The colour is the colour of blood and the smell is the smell of musk. The Proof to that is the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that is agreed upon that the Prophet (peace be upon him) (said): “If a person gets wounded in the way of Allah, he will come on the Day of Judgment with his wound in the same condition as it was when it was first inflicted; its colour being the colour of blood but its smell will be the smell of musk.”[4] 3- The one who is unfaithful with the spoils of war: comes on the Day of Resurrection with what he was unfaithful because of His words Almighty: {وَمَن يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ } “And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection” [Al Imran: 161] Al Qurtubi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “And he who acts unfaithfully shall bring that in respect of which he has acted unfaithfully”i.e.: comes carrying on his back and neck, being punished by carrying it with its weight, uncomfortable by its sound, ashamed to show his betrayal in front of the onlookers”[5] 4- The eater of interest: he is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection on a specific state that he deserves because he ate interest. He is resurrected like the person who has been afflicted by madness because of His words Almighty: {الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ الرِّبَا لَا يَقُومُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَقُومُ الَّذِي يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّۚ} “Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity.” [Al Baqara: 275] Ibn Katheer (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “meaning that they do not rise from their graves on the Day of Resurrection except like the epileptic when they have a fit and the Shaitan afflicts him. Because of that he is resurrected in a disliked state. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the eater of interest is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection as a choking mad person.” Narrated by Ibn Abu Hatim. He said: it was narrated of Auf ibn Malik, Sa`id ibn Jubair, Al Saddi, Al Rabi’ ibn Anas and Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding that.[6] 5- The traitor: on the Day of Resurrection a flag is raised for him exposing his treachery, especially the one who had an independent public state as he had authority over the common people, because his departure causes a lot of harm over much of the creation. Proof to that: the Hadith of Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) that is agreed upon, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When Allah will gather together, on the Day of Judgment, all the earlier and later generations of mankind, a flag will be raised (to mark off) every person guilty of breach of faith, and it will be announced that this is the perfidy of so and so, son of so and so (to attract the attention of people to his guilt)”[7]. In a narration by Muslim from the Hadith of Abu Sa`id (may Allah be pleased with him): “There is no guilt of treachery more serious than the one committed by the ruler of men.”[8] (Being) unfaithful with the spoils of war, eating of interest and treason are all actions that their companions remained on until they died. They are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection on a state that is suitable for what they were on because if they repented before they died, Allah Almighty would have forgiven them. What was mentioned were some of the witnesses that proved these verses. The common action falls under what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every servant would be raised (in the same very state) in which he dies.”[9]. Because of that it is eminent that every Muslim improves their deeds to improve their ending and so improve the condition that they will be resurrected on. Ibn Qayyim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “this is among the greatest jurisprudence that a person should be afraid of that his deeds should deceive him at death so they change what is between himself and a good ending.” The Hafiz Abdul Haq Al Ashbeeli (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “for the poor ending –may Allah protect us from it, there are reasons, paths and doors, the greatest of which is: to be (overly) occupied with the world, asking for it and taking heed of it, reluctance of the end and what is coming, not fearing the transgressions of Allah…” Speaking about the good and bad endings is a long discussion with regards to the conditions of the piouos predecessors. Their fear and actions give the best examples. Allah knows best -After the resurrection the horrors and agony of that day starts. We ask Allah Almighty to make that easy for us; (and grant us) safety and victory. People are resurrected. For you are the details of the gathering, the situations of the people in that, their great stances and what horror there is in them. Allah knows best. To Him there is the return and the fate.
